CAMPERS AND STAFF GIVE TO MISSIONS

Pam Baker's "Polly" Mission trip to Northwest Canada
Pam Baker (“Polly”) and her husband Roscoe went on a mission trip to the Northwest Territories in Canada in August, 2007, handing out Bibles for the Gideons. Here are few highlights from her trip!

We traveled some 2500 miles over four days by pickup truck to get to the Northwest Territories in Canada. We met many people glad to receive God's word and one that refused it.

The Hay River Baptist Church congregation and other members of the community greeted us with an informal backyard BBQ. We worshiped at the Baptist church on Sunday morning and at Dene' Pentecostal Church on the Dene' Indian Reserve Sunday evening. Roscoe was asked to tell about the Gideons ministry since they had not had a Gideon in the community for a very long time.

On Tuesday we visited with the pastor of the Anglican Church We gave her a couple of copies of the "Roman Road Plan" to copy and place in the Bibles that she gives to people. We learned that all the pastors and priests in the Hay River area are born again Christians! It seems that when a pastor goes out of town, his church’s members will attend services & Bible studies at another church in town. The various churches also work together in a jail ministry. We were allowed to place several Personal Worker Testaments in the jail.

We visited several times with the Chief Alec Sunrise of the Dene' Reserve. He invited us to visit the tribal offices and pass out our Personal Worker Testaments there. He also said we could visit other sites on the Dene' Reserve, so we did. One of the places we stopped at was the "Judith Fabian Group Home" for adults. They were very pleased to receive God's Word.

I was invited to have coffee with two ladies from the Baptist Church on Monday at their Christian bookstore. They made me feel like I was at home in Kansas. What a blessing it was to sit and visit with Christian sisters so far from home.

We felt like we were giving the pastors some encouragement. They couldn't believe that someone would travel so far to bring God's Word to their community. They seemed to really appreciate it. They told us they wished we could stay longer and could come back again.

A young man named Matthew Nimegeers from the Dene' Pentecostal Church stopped by our hotel room just about every day to visit with Roscoe about his thoughts on the Bible. He was honored for us to give him a new Bible of his own. Matthew is an LPN at the local hospital. He and his wife Katie have 2 daughters and care for foster children in their home.

Every day the hotel dog would stop by our room to visit with us, also. I guess a former visitor in that room gave him doggie treats.

We had to cut our trip short as Roscoe's health continued to get worse so we headed for home and were back by the 28th of August. At first we didn't feel we were able to finish what we were sent to do, but we now know that we did what God called us to do and that was to be obedient to Him and go spread His word. We had the privilege of passing out over 230 Gideons Personal Workers Testaments and replaced about 20 Bibles in the hotel we stayed at in Hay River, plus Roscoe had the opportunity to give 10 Slim-line Bibles along the way of our travels. We also left 15 Bibles with the pastors to use in their prison ministry.

We have been in touch with the Canadian Gideons International trying to help set up a Gideon camp in the Hay River area as it had been years since a Gideon had last been able to speak in their town. The pastors & men from Hay River said they would welcome having a Gideons camp.
